He dog-ears his page and stands.\n\n        \"Impatient today,\" he says. He doesn't phrase it as a question because it isn't one. Maybe ten.\n\n        \"Twenty-two,\" he says. \"I started it from a single leaf. A leaf that fell off someone else's jade plant into my pocket at a garden show. I stuck it in dirt because why not. Forgot about it. Found a tiny plant three weeks later.\"\n\n        He sets it on the bench. It's heavy. The pot scrapes against the metal surface.\n\n        \"Jade grows about two inches a year if you're lucky,\" he says. \"Two inches. You can't watch it grow. You'd go insane. But you look away for a year, and suddenly it's branched. Look away for five, and it's got a trunk. Look away for twenty --\" he gestures at the plant \"-- and it's this.\"\n\n        He pinches one of the thick leaves gently. \"Every one of these is a day of water. A week of sunlight. They store it. They don't spend it all at once. They just keep accumulating, quietly, until one day the thing is so substantial you can't lift the pot.\"\n\n        You look at the jade. It doesn't look dramatic or rare. It looks solid. Undeniable.
