The glass is fogged from the inside. Everything drips. Somewhere, a fan clicks in slow rotation.\n\n        Theo sees you from across the room. He's bent over a workbench, wire cutters in hand, shaping something you can't see. He sets the tools down carefully, the way a surgeon might, and walks toward you. His hands are rough, nails permanently dark with soil.\n\n        \"Rough stretch?\" he asks. He's looking at your hands. You realize you've been clenching them.\n\n        He nods toward the bonsai room. You follow. The gravel crunches under your feet in a rhythm that slows your breathing without you deciding to. The room is dim, reverent. Bonsai sit on their low pedestals like small monuments.\n\n        He stops at a juniper that takes your breath. The trunk spirals like wrung rope, bark stripped in places to reveal pale deadwood underneath. The live vein -- a ribbon of green bark -- winds up the twisted column, feeding a crown of dense, blue-green foliage. The tree looks like it has been fighting the wind for a hundred years.
