The air inside is thick, vegetal, alive. Water beads on the glass walls. A vine has crept across the doorframe since your last visit, reaching for the outside.\n\n        Theo is sweeping. Just sweeping. Slow, deliberate strokes with a bamboo broom, clearing fallen leaves from the stone path. He sees you and props the broom against a shelf of ferns.\n\n        \"Your mind's noisy today,\" he says. He's not wrong. You came in buzzing, full of half-finished thoughts, tabs open in your brain that won't close.\n\n        He doesn't take you to the main greenhouse floor. He walks you straight to the bonsai room, and today it feels even more still. The raked gravel patterns are fresh -- parallel lines curving around the table legs like water flowing around stones. He must have done them this morning.\n\n        The pine sits on the center table. It's different from the others. Where the maple is delicate and the juniper dramatic, this tree is simply clear. A straight trunk, dark and furrowed. Horizontal branches extending outward in tiers, each one a clean shelf of clustered needles. No excess. No wasted gesture. It looks like a diagram of itself.\n\n        \"Forty years of work in this tree,\" Theo says. He stands beside it, not touching. \"Not forty years of adding things. Forty years of taking things away.\"\n\n        He points to a spot on the trunk where a branch once grew. The scar has healed over, smooth and round. \"There was a branch here. Beautiful branch. But it competed with the one above it. So someone, decades ago, made a cut.\" He moves his finger up. \"And here. And here. Every absence is a decision.\"\n\n        You look at the tree again. It's not minimal because it's young or undeveloped. It's minimal because someone spent years carefully removing everything that wasn't essential.\n\n        \"People think simplicity means doing less,\" Theo says. \"It doesn't. It means knowing what to remove. That's harder than adding. Anyone can add.\"\n\n        The pine smells clean. Resinous.
